Slow Down Society
Today we live in such a fast-moving society. It seems like we always have someplace we have to be or something we need to do. We basically live on autopilot; doing our same exact routine each day. Some might be thinking or even stressing about how their future will turn out while others beat themselves up over what they did or didn't do in the past. The thing I wonder is, whatever happened to living in the present moment?
What Does It Mean To Live In The Present Moment?
Living in the present moment means letting go of the past and not waiting for the future. It means living your life consciously, aware that each moment you breathe is a gift. Keeping this in mind, why would we beat ourselves up over things in our past or stress ourselves out about the future? There is nothing you can do about it. You already lived the past and the future is nonexistent yet, so the only thing that we can control is our present moment. What we do during this moment will shape our future.
What I've Learned
It is hard to live in the present moment when your subconscious makes up 98% of your brain. Recently my family started reading a book titled The Untethered Soul and it explained how the subconscious mind is liked an annoying roommate that never stops talking. Your roommate is constantly worrying about things that you have to get done that it becomes hard to live in the present moment. You can't make this voice go away, but by being aware of it you can make the conscious decision to let that voice know that it is ok. How do I do this? You may be asking. With everything I have learned since I started my personal development journey is that once in a while if I stop what I am doing and take three deep breaths that it helps me connect and notice how I am feeling and why. Once you become aware of how you are feeling and then you can make a change if you don't like the way you feel.
Action Items
If you are not reading this on a cell phone, then get it out. Go into the clock app and set your alarm for every two hours. When the alarm goes off do the breathing exercise I explained earlier. It doesn't have to be for long. Just check-in with your body and see how you feel.
