Winter is the Harshest Season
In my opinion, I think winter is the toughest season of them all. Not only is it a time where people go into a deep depression with not being able to go outside very often;but it is also a time of what feels like non-stop cold. For most of the states in the United States of America, winter lasts for maybe two months with some places not getting very much snow fall( 1 or 2 inches at most) like it is here in Georgia; but that wasn't the case in Colorado. During the period I lived here it seemed like there was only two seasons with having two or three months of summer and seven or eight months of winter with roughly 37 inches of snowfall throughout this period of time.
Preparing for winter is hard enough with trying to find affordable products to keep you warm; but it is especially hard when trying to find things to wear that you can do with one hand. A little while back we discussed how to zip your coat with one hand which takes care of keeping your body warm; but the challenging part is keeping your hands warm. With this being said, how do you put on gloves with one hand?
My Vision for this Blog
In this blog, I am going to discuss some challenges with using gloves, share different technics to easily put on gloves, and some products that can increase your chance of staying warm.
The challenges of using Gloves
I have never really been a fan of winter. As a little girl I spent time outside doing what other kids did in the snow with having snowball fights with family and friends, sledding, making snow angels, and of course trying our hand at making a good sized snowman. It was fun at the time I will admit; but after a while I would get bored with the lack of activities I could do in the snow or the rare times that the cold would catch up to me causing me to retreat indoor to warm up. Come to think of it though, the real reason why I would bundle up and play in the snow wasn't really because I enjoyed it that much, but rather it was due to the fact that it allowed me to be outside along with the fact that my sister loved to play in the snow with me; so I would embrace being out in the snow for a while because that is what big sisters do.
For me, preparing myself to go out into the snow wasn't as easy as it was for my sister with just putting on my snow gear and going out to play. Instead it took me a while to get my snowsuit on, my hat, boots, and finally my gloves which ended up taking the longest. I think the biggest struggle with trying to put gloves on is trying to get the fingers of the hand I don't use into the correct finger positions on the gloves; even with the help of my parents. I found this very tricky especially when my hand and fingers were stiff from being in a fist all the time that it was a struggle in itself. Once my parents got my hand open they would move my fingers around to get them in the finger slots with me not being able to help them since I can't use that hand. For roughly 10-15 minutes it would be spent getting one in finger in the correct hole and then taking one of my other fingers out of the wrong hole. Sometimes my fingers would get so tangeled up with one another that we would have to start all over. After what felt like a century had past I would have my fingers in the right slots and would get to go outside to play.
If that wasn't challenging enough there was one more struggle that I encountered as I played in the snow. Growing up the left side of my body developed in a strange way with everything from my veins running all over the place, my bones/legamits not being as strong as the right side, and overall my left side being smaller than the right side. On more than one occasion I would be so focused on playing with my sister that I didn't even realize that the glove I was wearing on my left had fallen off since I had no feeling on that side of my body. This caused me to have to stop playing, retrace my steps, and shove my hand back into the glove the best I could, so I could get back to playing.
There has to be a better way
Much like the different inventions that I talked about with zipping a jacket with one hand there are also different ways to easily put and keep gloves on with on hand. For a while when I was younger I started using mittens instead of gloves so I didn't have to worry about getting my fingers in the correct spot each time I needed to wear them. This took care of spending forever getting ready, but I still had the problem of my mitten falling off my hand when I played. As I got older I started using regular gloves again, but instead of spending time putting my fingers in the right position I just kept my hand in a fist and pushed it into the glove as far as it would go and tucked the top part into the sleeve of my jacket to try and keep it on my hand.
Some other ways to easily put on and keep gloves on includes;
- Wearing gloves or mittens with a zipper on the side
- Wearing gloves or mittens with a velcro strap up by the wrist of the glove
By wearing these types of gloves it will help you easily put them on, keep them on, and keep your hands warm in the winter.
Another way to keep your hands warm in winter
Back in October when my family was in the process of packing up a UHaul to start our moving journey from Colorado to Georgia we were surprised with winter early and got a sudden snow storm on the night we were suppose to leave for our first trip out here to Georgia. This storm felt colder and more harsh than any other storm I have experienced. It was icy, cold, and still snowing with tons of snow already on the ground. With every step even though we had all our winter gear with layers underneath it was still super cold to the point that our bones even hurt from how cold it was and we still had to pack up the car in it. The only thing that kept us somewhat warm was putting hot hand packets in our gloves and the pockets of our jackets which helped us with each trip we made back to Colorado to keep us warm while we moved more of our stuff to our new home where we have all four seasons.
To Conclude
I truly believe that winter is the harshest season of them all; especially for places like Colorado; but with the right winter gear and products you can easily prepare and stay warm in winter.
You are so amazing and patient! 💜
